Release Notes for EVAfont v3.05
-------------------------------
Information in this document is more up to date than that in the
printed manual. Where information in the manual conflicts with
this document, you should assume that this document contains the
correct information. Some of the information may already be
included in the manual.
Compatibility Issues
--------------------
The font drivers produced by EVAfont are stand-alone TSR-type
programs which, when installed, will keep your fonts properly
loaded during execution of other DOS applications. Please note
that you don't need a driver to be loaded to run EVAfont itself.
The font drivers produced by EVAfont are compatible with all major
text-based software products and with some graphics applications.
But, of course, there still may be some hardware or software
products which may malfunction when EVAfont's drivers are
installed. In such cases, we would greatly appreciate it if you
could send a message to the JV DIALOGUE designers. Please,
include:
- the exact version of EVAfont and its drivers
- the manufacturer name and model of the video card and the
computer you're using
- the contents of your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files
- the DOS version
- the malfunctioning application name and version
As a quick work-around we suggest that you check all the resident
video-related software. The most dangerous may be various screen
enhancers and screen savers.
If You're Using A CGA Or Compatible Card
----------------------------------------
Since this video card has no text font download feature, alternate
fonts cannot be established in the text modes. You may still use
the 8x8 font driver to install the upper half of the font table
for graphics modes (interrupt 1Fh).
If You're Using An EGA Or Compatible Card
-----------------------------------------
If you're using an EGA card connected to an Enhanced Color Display
(standard display for EGA), lap-top LCD screen, or to a Monochrome
Display (one for MDA or Hercules cards) you should use drivers for
the 8x8 and 8x14 fonts. The first one will provide fonts for the
43 line mode. If you decide that you want to save 2.5K of RAM, you
can live without the 8x8 driver (and without the standard font in
those fancy more-than-25-lines modes).
If your EGA card is connected to a Color Display which is normally
used with CGA, you need to start only the 8x8 font driver.
If You're Using A VGA Or Compatible Card
----------------------------------------
If you're using a VGA card with a VGA Color Monitor or a VGA
Monochrome monitor, then you need to start drivers for each type
of font (i.e. 8x8, 8x14 and 8x16). This is because VGA BIOS
contains patterns for all this fonts, so in order to have full VGA
functionality, you need to override all of them.
If your VGA is connected to an Enhanced Color Display (standard
display for EGA) or to the Monochrome Display (one for MDA or
Hercules cards) you should use the drivers for the 8x8 and 8x14
fonts.
In case you are such a weird person that you're running your great
VGA card with a 'fuzzy' Color Display intended for old CGA's, just
use the 8x8 font driver. Good luck...
Note for Toshiba Laptop Users
-----------------------------
Toshiba T1600 (and maybe some other models) should run EVAfont in
a 'SAFE' mode by including /S switch in the command line. Failure
to do this will produce random patterns in the Character Edit
Window upon program start.
This incompatibility does not affect EVAfont produced drivers.
EVAfont And OS/2 DOS Compatibility Shell
----------------------------------------
As far as known EVAfont and it's drivers work OK in the OS/2 DOS
Compatibility Shell. The only thing to mention: when switching
from OS/2 session back to DOS Shell while EVAfont running in it
screen looks a bit strange. Use /F switch when starting EVAfont to
avoid this problem.
